Spirit of the Gulf sings four-part harmony, barbershop style and all varieties from ballads to show tunes, jazz and spirituals. The chorus is part of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of nearly 30,000 women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances.

The chapter, Spirit of the Gulf was chartered February 18, 2001. The membership is currently at 135 voices and growing each week. It is the largest Sweet Adelines chorus in Florida. The chorus has already earned a reputation for its rich sound and obvious joy for performing.

After only three months Spirit of the Gulf received honors in a statewide competition, and earned the right to compete in International Competition, in Nashville, Tennessee in November of 2002! In the spring of 2003 the chorus achieved their goal by becoming the Regional Chorus Champions for the first time, as a group, and for many of the members individually as well. The championship qualified Spirit of the Gulf to go on to International Competition in 2004, in Indianapolis, Indiana, where Spirit of the Gulf placed 9th in the world.

Spirit of the Gulf is a non-profit organization. A percentage of the profits from shows and performances go into the Patty Bembry Memorial Music Scholarship, which is presented in May to a young woman who will be pursuing a music career in college in the fall. She is recommended by her music teachers and must meet certain criteria. Meet our scholarship winners! The chorus also continues its own education by bringing in coaches, several times a year, to increase vocal and performance skills. 

While members come to sing from diverse geographical locations, walks of life and age brackets, they share a common love for singing and for each other!

Spirit of the Gulf offers performance opportunities to talented youth in our two annual shows and we are currently sponsoring two Rising Star quartets by offering coaching and finanacial help with their other expenses.
