Attendance

Attendance at all possible rehearsals will help assure your success.  Rita Fraser will record your attendance each week.  If you have to be absent, please call Sandy Peterson at 239-561-4166 or email her at speterson49@earthlink.net, so that your absence can be registered as an excused absence. If you will be absent for three or more weeks, or if you are a snowbird, please download the Temporary Membership Change Request Form, complete it, and give it to me.  I also have the form at rehearsals. Thank you!

Janet Kuhns, Membership Chair

Riser Etiquette

Your Spirit of the Gulf riser neighbors would appreciate your consideration of these requests.

  1. Please no perfume, scented hairspray, scented deodorant, scented lotions or powders be worn at chorus rehearsals and performances.  Standing so close together could possibly cause a reaction to the various scents being worn since most allergic reactions affect the respiratory system and could be harmful to your neighbors.  Personal hygiene is a major consideration at every rehearsal and performance.

  2. Please stand with both feet at the front edge of the riser aka as Hanging Ten.  This allows the person behind you to have more room and those on the back row to feel more secure.  It also gives the chorus the confident look we are striving to achieve.

  3. Please no paper cups or open drink containers on the risers. While we encourage members to drink lots of water during rehearsal, it should be in a closed container.

  4. Please no talking during rehearsal.  A cut off by the director means the song/phrase should stop so improvements/refinements can be made.  Be attentive to the person standing in front of the chorus.

  5. Please do not correct your neighbors concerning note mistakes, choreography or words.  Chorus section leaders, tape evaluators and choreographers will take care of such problems.  Have a question?  Raise your hand at the appropriate time.

  6. Thank you for turning cell phones to "Silent Mode" or OFF for rehearsals.

  7. Please no bare feet on the risers. It is not a professional image for visitors to see.  Also not wearing shoes when learning or performing choreography can be dangerous when your neighbors’ feet are stepped on and injured.  Also consider the germs and bacteria breeding on those risers.

  8. Please do not store your music, tape recorder, etc on the riser beside you.  These items can be stepped on or knocked off during choreography movements.

  9. Please clear your riser space of all your belongings as quickly as possible at the end of rehearsal.

  10. Upon being dismissed from rehearsal, please exit the risers as quickly as possible before beginning any conversations.  You may be blocking someone behind you from getting down.  We also have gentlemen who may be waiting on YOU every week to begin taking down the risers. Just a reminder to please be considerate of those around you.

We all appreciate your cooperation. J

Riser Buddy Guidelines

1.   After a prospective member has been voice-placed, the Membership Chairperson asks the Riser Buddy Coordinator (Mary Ellen Schaertl) to pair her with a Riser Buddy.

a.  The Riser Buddy should have a fairly strong voice, sing the same voice part, and have a positive, supportive attitude.

b.  The prospective member stands next to the Riser Buddy on the risers, and should stay with her until she has passed her audition, at which time Karen will place her on the risers.

c.  The Riser Buddy is an encourager.  Don’t correct the prospective member or put undue pressure on her concerning her voice, the expenses, the difficulty of the music, etc.  Reassure her that she will get lots of help along the way.  Don’t tell her that “she will pass,” as we don’t know that.  Just encourage her.  She will have a handout in her Audition Folder that explains the financial obligations and the audition process. If you are at all unsure of an answer to a question, please ask the chairperson of that topic.  It’s usually better not to get into great detail during this time.

    2.  Be aware of the audition process that she will be going through:

a.   Audition requirements:  Voice tested, PVI, practice quartet, audition

b.  The Membership Chairperson arranges for a quartet who will stay with her until she passes her audition or withdraws.

c.   She tells the Membership Chairperson when she is ready to pre-audition with the quartet.  This is an opportunity for her to practice, and to learn how to improve.

d.  The audition consists of singing the contest up-tune with the quartet.

3.  When the new member is introduced to the chorus and given her nametag, her Buddy will place the nametag on her and congratulate her.  What a great bond to have with a new Spirit sister!

4.  The Riser Buddy will continue to be a buddy to the new member by helping her as she is learning the music, the choreography, and all the many aspects of being a member of Spirit of the Gulf.
